The site located at 431 Ruthven Street Toowoomba contains a Heritage listed building which we have been granted the opportunity to work alongside a team of professionals in re-vamping our countryside town.  The substantial two storey former Bank building is attached with separate tenancies and a rear garage.

The building was purpose built in 1941 for the Bank of New South Wales, now Westpac Bank.  Westpac Bank occupied the premises until late 2015.  The banking chamber occupied the corner space, while offices were located in the western part of the building fronting Margaret Street and on the first floor. Part of the first floor had been occupied by other tenants with access via the stairwell on the southern side of the building fronting Ruthven Street.

The rear of the site can be accessed from Lamb Street and includes a garage, the solid construction of which suggests it may have doubled as an air raid shelter, now used as a garage and for storage. It sits within a narrow open yard which also provides access to the rear of the main buildings and toilet areas. There is an external stairwell to access the roof area.

The building was recently purchased by our client who had the idea of converting the former bank and offices into a mixed retail / commercial development.

While the final occupation of the building is unknown at this stage the general intent is to reuse the former banking chamber located on the corner as retail space, the remaining space as mixed offices and the garage as a separate tenancy, accessible from Lamb Street. The rooftop space, which has historically always been used by the building occupants, is to be converted to a dining / function area.

The proposed concept for the building has taken into consideration the items of high significance within the Heritage listing. With input from our client, consultants and the builder; we have created an overall design that highlights the existing structural items been preserved.

We believe this building will become a great asset to our town.
